Solidarity (2019)

1hr 15 minutes

Blacklisting in the UK construction industry impacted thousands of workers who were labelled 'troublemakers' for speaking out and secretively denied employment. Activists uncovered alarming links between workplace blacklisting and undercover policing. Solidarity follows meetings between activists and law students, brought together for the film, revealing the determination of a community working together to find a route to justice.

Solidarity was made together with visual arts organisation City Projects, working alongside members of the Blacklist Support Group. The project generated several short films, exhibitions and events.  See more on the film’s website here.

Solidarity was awarded the prize in the Competition for First Appearance at International Documentary Festival Amsterdam.  The film premiered at Sheffield Docs and screened at festivals including Open City Documentary Festival, Document Festival Glasgow and a screening run at Bertha Doc House, London.

The film is now held in collections at the British Film Institute and in the University of Edinburgh Art Collection.

The project is Funded by Rhubaba Gallery Edinburgh, Arts Council England, Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust, Jerwood Charitable Foundation, Kingston University, Lipman Milliband Trust and donations from unions and individuals. It is an independent production commissioned by City Projects and officially supported by the Blacklist Support Group.

Solidarity is distributed by Cinema Politica, Canada and streaming on True Story
